Directed by Tissy Nnachi and produced by Uche Montana and Uchenna Mbunabo, More Than Marriage follows the story of a paranoid wife whose constant suspicions about her husband’s loyalty seem to overshadow her own shortcomings in fulfilling her role as a wife. This tension leads her to take extreme actions, which eventually forces her to reconsider her approach to both the marriage and her life choices.

Plot

The movie kicks off with an intense scene where Nkem is in the midst of an argument, trying to throw out the maid’s belongings, convinced that the maid has been seducing her husband. She attributes her ability to uncover this supposed betrayal to her grandmother’s prophetic abilities.

As the plot unfolds, Nkem’s insecurities continue to escalate, especially when her attempts in the kitchen lead to a series of failures. In response, she hires a new help, Hauwa, who soon becomes well-acquainted with both the house and Nkem’s husband.

As the tension grows, Nkem’s paranoia intensifies, and her fears become a reality when she discovers Hauwa has been more than just a maid to her husband. This revelation pushes Nkem to the brink, and Hauwa effortlessly transitions from a simple helper to the lady of the house. Just when Nkem’s worst nightmare seems to come true, she wakes up, realising it was all just a dream. But her relief is short-lived when the lines between dream and reality begin to blur.

Cast

With a relatively small cast, More Than Marriage features Uche Montana, Sophia Chisom, and Ray Emodi in key roles. Despite the limited cast size, the performances manage to keep the story engaging, though at times it feels as though the actors are trying to carry a bony plot with limited resources.

Language

Predominantly English Language.

Summary

Unfortunately, More Than Marriage falls short of expectations. The plot feels stale and predictable, and the narrative lacks the depth and development needed to make it compelling. The story’s progression feels more like a high school drama than a polished cinematic experience. Despite some interesting moments, the film struggles to captivate the audience, leaving viewers questioning the investment of their time.

The production, directed by Tissy Nnachi, and the performances, while earnest, are not enough to overcome the lacklustre writing and pacing. While More Than Marriage may appeal to fans of low-budget YouTube films, it ultimately delivers a viewing experience that feels more underwhelming than entertaining. It’s a missed opportunity for Uche Montana Media, who could have explored the concept with greater depth and originality.

In the end, More Than Marriage presents a familiar storyline that lacks the necessary execution to make it stand out. It feels more like a rushed project than a fully realised film, making it hard to recommend to those seeking a thoughtful or impactful cinematic experience.
