A brief overview of Wizkid, highlighting his impact and significance in the music industry.
Wizkid, born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun on July 16, 1990, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter celebrated for his influence on Afrobeats and Afropop. With a career spanning over a decade, he’s gained worldwide recognition for his chart-topping albums, groundbreaking collaborations with icons like Beyoncé and Drake, and his role in popularizing Afrobeats on the global stage. Wizkid’s journey has not only shaped Nigeria’s music scene but has contributed to Africa’s cultural footprint across the world.
Wizkid began his career in Lagos, Nigeria, and was discovered by Banky W, the founder of EME (Empire Mates Entertainment). His debut single, Holla at Your Boy (2010), captured audiences with its fresh sound, blending Afrobeat rhythms with catchy pop elements. This single paved the way for his first album, Superstar (2012), a collection of hits like No Lele, Pakurumo, and Don’t Dull. Superstar was a commercial success, helping launch Wizkid’s first UK tour in 2012 and a U.S. tour soon after.
In 2014, Wizkid left EME to establish his own label, Starboy Entertainment, releasing Ayo as his sophomore album, which included the hit Ojuelegba. This track, remixed with Drake and Skepta, became a defining moment in his career. Ojuelegba showcased the rich storytelling and rhythm of Afrobeats to an international audience, marking Wizkid’s first taste of global acclaim.
Drake’s One Dance, which featured Wizkid, became one of Spotify’s most-streamed songs and earned multiple platinum certifications globally. The track reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, amassing millions of plays and setting a high bar for African artists entering Western charts
After founding Starboy Records in 2014, Wizkid signed with RCA Records (a subsidiary of Sony Music) in 2016. His 2017 album Sounds from the Other Side (SFTOS), featuring tracks like Come Closer with Drake, solidified his international appeal and demonstrated the versatility of Afrobeats. Wizkid has signed artists like Terri to his label and collaborated with brands such as Nike, Puma, and Ciroc through strategic endorsements, boosting his global influence.
Throughout his career, Wizkid has worked with notable artists, including 2Baba, Tems, Beyoncé, Burna Boy, and H.E.R. His 2019 collaboration with Beyoncé on Brown Skin Girl earned him a Grammy Award and won Video of the Year at the Soul Train Awards. Essence, his track with Tems from the Made in Lagos album, became the first Nigerian song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, marking a major milestone for Nigerian music on the global stage .
