The first quarter of the year 2023 has been met with a plethora of music releases by African artists- at home and in the diaspora. While some have been mundane, others have notably stood out, giving much-needed life to the quarter.
The impressive rollout isn’t about to reach a decline as every week, music consumers get thrilled by brand new songs from their favorite artists.
The Twelfth week of the new year is no different, as the week has seen varieties of new releases.
And these are ten of the best new songs in Africa at the moment.
Odumodublvck – Declan Rice
Following the success of ‘Picanto’, Native records signee, and Afro-grime artist, Odumodublvck drops long-teased single, ‘Declan Rice’, a song which the Nigerian rapper titles after popular England Football player with the same name. Looking to ump the energy, this is definitely the record you need.
K.O – Sete Remix (Feat. Oxlade, Diamond Platnumz, Young Stunna)
South African rapper, K.O. delivers a star-studded remix to his hit track, ‘Sete’. For the remix, the former teargas member recruits Tanzanian’s Diamond platnumz and Oxlade to mix. Original collaborator Young stunna also makes the cut by sticking to his initial verse. The remix was produced by Emmanuel Mutendji.Â
Muthaka – Go (acoustic) (Feat. Chemutai Sage)
Talented Kenyan Rhythm and blues singer, Muthaka is back with the acoustic version of her sleeper hit, ‘Go’. Singing over R&b guitar chord sequences, she pours her out melodiously, belting riffs, and runs alongside fellow Kenyan singer and instrumentalist, Chemutai Sage.
Victony & Tempoe – Soweto Remix (Feat. Don Toliver, and Rema)
After months of anticipation, Victony’s much-teased remix to his smash hit, ‘Soweto’ finally dropped and fans were thrilled and a little bit bemused. The remix featured guest verses from American singer, Don Toliver, and Nigerian singer, Rema, and it is one of the best new releases of the week.
Ali Loka – We Lesa Ya DonyaÂ
Egyptian rapper and singer, Ali Loka explores Caribbean rhythm in his new single, ‘We Lesa Ya Donya.’ The reggaeton-influenced song is groovy and lively, a step back from the rapper’s comfort zone.
Jay Bahd – Yaa Baby
Ghanaian Hip-hop artist, Jay Bahd releases a fresh Grime tune titled, ‘Yaa Baby’. The indigenous rapper flows seamlessly on the new jam, showing off the skills that have earned him a following in the Ghanaian music industry.
Ethan Muziki – Hivyo
Kenyan Singer, songwriter, and producer, Ethan Muziki tell beautiful tales on his latest single, ‘Hivyo’. The neo-folk/ pop record explores themes of Insecurities, nostalgia, and Love. An emotional listen overall.
Karyenda Soul, Msaki- Jacaranda
South African Music producer, and Disk jockey, Karyenda Soul releases his newest single titled, ‘Jacaranda’. The House record features the soulful vocals of super-talented singer, Msaki. ‘Jacaranda’ was produced by Karyenda himself, with songwriting assistance from Asanda Mvana, and Bonga Ntozini.
Kofi – Don’t Lie (Feat. Kuami Eugene)
Ghanaian singers, Kofi and Kuami Eugene are skeptical about love on ‘Don’t Lie.’ The trap/hip-hop record was produced by Timothy Williams, and mixed by Cold Melody.
Magixx – Colors(My Baby)
Talented Nigerian singer and songwriter, Magixx is back with yet another soft ballad. The mavin signee titles this one ‘Colors’. The song is melodious, catchy and well-written. In-house producer to the mavin records, Andre vibez is in charge of music production. This is one song you need to include in your lovers playlist.
