My Bestfriend’s Son Movie Review: Drama Without Depth

Bewaji has it all, or so it seems. A powerful CEO, a single mother, and a social media darling dishing out daily doses of motivational wisdom.

Toyin Abraham TV turns up the heat with My Bestfriend’s Son, a provocative tale where love refuses to follow the rules. What happens when a woman finds herself drawn to a man half her age, who just happens to be her best friend’s son? In this daring dance between desire and loyalty, hearts are tested, secrets smoulder, and the age gap is only the beginning of the drama.

Plot

Bewaji has it all, or so it seems. A powerful CEO, a single mother, and a social media darling dishing out daily doses of motivational wisdom. But behind the filters and fierce captions lies a woman battling loneliness and heartbreak. After being ghosted by her baby daddy and tangled in a string of toxic relationships, including a violent affair with a married man, Bewaji’s love life is anything but inspirational.

Now, Samuel, young, charming, and completely off-limits. He’s the son of Adenike, Bewaji’s best friend, a devoted wife and mother who needs a place for her son to stay during his NYSC. Bewaji agrees, unaware that her life is about to spin wildly out of control.

Samuel moves in and soon becomes more than just a houseguest. He witnesses the abuse Bewaji suffers and steps in like a knight in shining armour. One moment of rescue turns into something far more complicated: a kiss, a night, a secret. Lines blur, sparks fly, and emotions explode.

What starts as a dangerous comfort turns into a full-blown secret relationship. But things take a scandalous turn when Samuel refuses to leave after his service year. The bubble bursts when Bewaji’s maid tips off Adenike, who walks in and catches her best friend in the act with her son.

Now, reputations are on the line, friendships are shattered, and Bewaji’s perfectly curated online persona is cracking at the seams. With the world watching and her heart torn, the ultimate question remains: Will forbidden love triumph, or will the weight of betrayal crush everything in its path?

Cast

My Bestfriend’s Son features elite actors like Toyin Abraham, Bolaji Ogunmola, Muyiwa Ademola, Adeolu Akintoba, Dapo Martins, Dr Rommel Asagwara, Tola Gold, and Emmanuella Afolabi.

Language

My Bestfriend’s Son was predominantly in Yoruba, with a perfect blend of English, beautifully capturing the essence of a typical Yoruba home and setting.

Summary

My Bestfriend’s Son flaunts a star-studded cast, polished cinematography, and a culturally rich setting that feels both familiar and captivating. From the get-go, it promises fire, and in many ways, it delivers. But when it comes to the plot? Let’s just say the flames flicker.

The storyline isn’t exactly breaking new ground—older woman, younger man, scandalous love—but we’ll give it credit for swerving away from the cliché “love conquers all” ending. That unexpected twist was refreshing. Plus, Bewaji’s history of messy, socially frowned-upon relationships adds just enough backstory to almost justify the forbidden romance with her best friend’s son. Almost.

Here’s where it gets tricky: Samuel. The choice of the lead male character felt off. His looks and energy didn’t quite match the intensity of the role. In fact, the actor who played Bewaji’s son might’ve been a better and far less cringey fit. Maybe that contrast was intentional? Hard to tell.

What really left us hanging was the lack of fight, no real struggle for the relationship save for the battle to reclaim her image, and ultimately, no clear direction. The plot wanders, and just when you think it’s about to go somewhere, it fades out, leaving you wondering, was that it?

It screams sequel energy with that abrupt, unsatisfying ending. But despite its flaws, My Bestfriend’s Son still manages to entertain, spark debate, and keep viewers talking, which, let’s be honest, is half the point.
