Simera Sense, a pioneering tech firm based in South Africa, has successfully raised $14.75 million in funding aimed at bolstering its production capabilities. This injection of capital marks a significant milestone for the company, which had previously secured €1.2 million ($1.3 million) in seed funding back in 2018.

The newly acquired funding is earmarked to propel Simera Sense’s expansion efforts, particularly focusing on enhancing its product range, streamlining delivery timelines, and advancing its onboard processing solutions to the next level.

At the forefront of Simera Sense’s innovations is its pioneering work in onboard data processing for camera control electronics. This groundbreaking technology aims to circumvent the bandwidth and communication challenges typically encountered when processing data from satellite cameras on terrestrial grounds.

With the infusion of fresh capital, Simera Sense is poised to accelerate the development and commercialization of this transformative technology, aiming to bring it to market expeditiously.

Established in 2018 by visionary entrepreneur Johann du Toit, Simera Sense specialises in supplying a diverse array of high-resolution cameras to clients within the global small satellite industry. The applications of these cameras span across various sectors, catering to the needs of clients from diverse industries.

Since its inception, Simera Sense has cultivated a robust presence in Europe, forging strategic partnerships and collaborations with key stakeholders, including prominent entities such as AAC Clyde Space, Open Cosmos, OHB Systems, and the European Space Agency.

Commenting on the recent funding milestone, Johann du Toit expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Satellite imagery plays a pivotal role in addressing terrestrial challenges, and the vibrant growth of the Earth observation and broader space market underscores its significance. This is an incredibly exciting time for our company.”

Currently, Simera Sense boasts a production capacity of approximately 25 payloads per year, alongside 30–40 engineering and test models. Looking ahead, the company has ambitious plans to ramp up its output to 200 payloads per year across various configurations.

In line with its expansion strategy, Simera Sense intends to augment its development team over the next two years, doubling its workforce. This strategic move aims to facilitate closer collaboration with critical material and component suppliers in Europe, fostering more efficient product development partnerships.
