Nativeland: Another December, Another Disaster

Nativeland, one of the country’s most popular Detty December events, was once again at the centre of attention for negative reasons after a stage collapse, which sparked some outrage on social media. For some, the incident was no surprise and also served as a stark reminder of the festival’s not-so-good safety record.

Nativeland is an annual music festival held in Lagos. The festival usually boasts an exciting lineup of local and international artists. Nativeland initially found its home at Muri Okunola Park. However, following a devastating incident during its 2019 edition, the organisers have opted for different venues.

What happened at Nativeland 2024?

The event was going great, with partygoers enjoying live performances from their favourite artists. The excitement reached a fever pitch with a surprise appearance by Wizkid, who performed new releases from his new album, Kese and Karamo, as well as classics like Soco and Ojuelegba

However, the major talking point from the event came just as Odumodublvck was preparing to take the stage. As one of the headliners, his performance was highly anticipated. The stage was packed with members of Odumodublvck’s squad, artists, industry personnel, DJs, hypemen, engineers, sound equipment, and speakers. Suddenly, the stage buckled under the weight of relentless pressure and collapsed, leaving attendees visibly shocked. 

The organisers or any law enforcement agency reported no injuries or fatalities. However, a disturbing tweet by someone who claimed to be close to the situation on X claims that the incident resulted in a fatality. It’s essential to note that this report remains unverified and unconfirmed, and further investigation is necessary to determine its accuracy.

A pattern of negligence?

This is not the first time Nativeland is at the centre of such controversy. The 2019 edition of the event is remembered for descending into chaos as Fireboy DML performed Scatter. Reports said the first sign of trouble came when the VIP lounge’s metal barriers collapsed, causing injuries and triggering a stampede.

Security personnel made efforts to restore order, but the situation spiralled out of control. Attendees scaled the fences of Muri Okunola Park to reach safety. Security personnel eventually managed to restore order and control the crowd of energetic youths for a moment.

The chaos reached another level as bystanders attempted to force their way into the already packed venue, most driven by opportunism. The clash between those trying to enter and those trying to leave led to the collapse of the main gate causing further casualties.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities, but many attendees were hospitalised and traumatized. Nativeland’s subsequent statement was met with strong criticism of X.

The 2023 edition of Nativeland promised an experience, boasting a star-studded lineup featuring Odumodublvck, Shallipopi, Ayra Starr, Ammarae, Lancey Foux, Cruel Santino, Crayon, Odeal, Bloody Civilian, and a host of emerging talents. Unfortunately, the event was marred by several issues, leaving attendees who paid a premium for tickets feeling short-changed.

Sound issues plagued the festival, and poor time management made matters worse. Billed performers including Santino, Bloody Civilian, and Odunsi (The Engine) did not take the stage. Ayra Starr’s highly anticipated performance did not happen until almost 5AM. 

Nativeland was again trending on social media for all the wrong reasons.

Valid Concerns

The latest incident has only reignited questions about the ability of the event organisers to deliver a hassle-free concert experience. Nativeland has since issued a statement apologising for the incident.

This is another devastating blow to the Nativeland brand. After the debacle of previous years, fans remain willing to give the festival another chance. However, the 2024 edition’s dismal display may have crossed a line. These experiences suggest a disregard for standards. The damage to the Nativeland brand is incalculable, as fans are suggesting that the festival should be permanently cancelled. This reflects a complete lack of trust in the organisers.

The Nativeland stage collapse serves as another reminder of the need for improved standards in the events industry. Ensuring the safety and well-being of festivalgoers must be the number one concern for event organisers. Providing a memorable and enjoyable concert experience is equally as important.

This incident also displays the importance of opting for stage designers with construction qualifications. This would bring an increased level of expertise and attention to detail reduce the risk of structural failures, and ensure a safer environment for performers and attendees. Festival organisers must work closely with relevant authorities, safety experts, and industry stakeholders to establish and enforce stringent standards.

Ultimately, the success of events like Nativeland should be measured not only by ticket sales but also by the festival’s ability to guarantee a secure and exceptional experience for all attendees. 

Nativeland held a revered spot as the premier concert destination for Nigeria’s IJGB audience, a testament to its influence. Fader aptly dubbed it “The go-to platform for African youth culture,” enhancing its reputation as a showcase of Nigeria’s vibrant creative expression. 

Recent setbacks surrounding NATIVELAND call for introspection. The organisers must take a step back, reassess, and contemplate the future of the event. They must decide whether it’s time to bring the curtain down or forge ahead with renewed purpose.

If the choice is the latter, they must return with a focus on excellence and commitment to delivering a seamless concert experience that meets the highest standards of quality, safety, and entertainment. Anything less would be a disservice to the event’s legacy and the loyal fans who have supported it thus far. The culture needs Nativeland; this writer is rooting for them.
