The second quarter of the year is already looking bright for African music. African artists are steadily pushing the boundaries and changing the narratives of African music.

The sixteenth week of the new year saw new and exciting music releases from some of the finest artists in the continent, 

Here are ten of our finest picks, do enjoy.

Rema – Rave & Roses (Ultra)

Popular Nigerian singer-songwriter and Mavin signee, Rema has been enjoying his own share of global triumph and to celebrate his recent feats, he treats fans and music listeners to a deluxe version or ultra version of his critically acclaimed debut, ‘Rave and Roses’. The ultra version features Calm Down remix featuring Selena Gomez,  freshly added singles like Holiday, Reason You, and the recently teased Hov, Charm, and Dunno Me(Freestyle). The ultra version has quickly become the most streamed African album of all time on Spotify with over 1 billion streams, crazy times!

Nomfundo Moh – Uthando Lunye

South African songbird Nomfundo Moh is singing her heart out in her recent earworm titled, ‘Uthando Lunye’. The record is a soulful number with lush music productions. This a beautiful follow-up to her 2022 Album, ‘Amagama’.

Medikal – God Abeg (Feat. Kwesi Arthur, Joey B, Kay T)

Ghanaian hit-maker, Medikal is in his element once more with a new anthem titled, ‘God Abeg’. The rapper has been on a music release spree this year and he is not looking to slow down. The latest hip-hop tune features guest verses from other Ghanaian hip-hop heavyweights like Kwesi Arthur, and Joey B with an equally laudable effort from fast-rising rapper, Kay T.

Boutross – Miss Behaviour (Feat. Savara, Fathermoh)

Kenyan record producer, rapper, singer, and songwriter, Boutross explores dancehall rhythms and hip-hop snares on the catchy tune titled, ‘Miss Behaviour’. The song is a feel-good record about hedonistic quests. Miss behaviour features Savara, and Fathermoh.

Zlatan – Omo Ologo(EP)

Popular Nigerian hit-making connoisseur, Zlatan Ibile is holding the year 2023 on a chokehold. The rapper and singer-songwriter have been consistent this year with music releases. He once again satisfies his core fans by releasing an Extended play titled, ‘Omo Ologo’.

StoneBwoy – 5TH Dimension (Album)

Ghanaian superstar, Stonebwoy released his much-anticipated body of work titled, ‘5th Dimension’. The popular singer assembled an impressive list of guest artists on the full-length album with the likes of Tiwa Savage, Oxlade, DJ Maphporisa among others gracing the project. 

Mejja – Punguza Ego

Beloved legendary Kenyan artiste, Mejja makes a comeback after a short hiatus from the music scene. The talented rapper sticks to his famed genge music style on his latest satirical record titled, ‘Punguza Ego’. 

Samira Said- Zeelna Min Baad

Popular Moroccan songstress, Samira Said drops a new single titled, ‘Zeelna Min Baad’. The record was written by Mohamed Yehia, and co-written by Ramadan Mohamed with production credits going to Amir Mahrous.

Darque, Sjava – Mngani

Molapo ‘Darque’ Malatji is a South African singer, record producer, and songwriter. His recent work titled, ‘Mngani’ features the equally talented Sjava. ‘Mngani‘ is melodic and enjoyable. The Amapiano record was produced by music producer, Jnr Sa and Darque himself.

Mayorkun – For Daddy

Popular Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Mayorkun made many happy this week when he dropped his recent single ‘For Daddy’ after a while away from the music scene and his abrupt departure from bedrock label, DMW. The record is a happy-themed single with melodic and harmonic cadences to crown a befitting welcome back. The single was produced by Agada Prince Oyada.
