In Echoes of the Past, director Sadeer Massoud takes us on an intense, emotional rollercoaster with a story that blends justice, vengeance, and buried secrets. The film follows a young man who spends 15 long years behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit: the murder of his sister. Once exonerated and released, he’s not just looking for freedom—he’s out for revenge.
Echoes of the Past plunges viewers into a heartbreaking mystery that twists through love, betrayal, and a fight for justice. The film opens with a tragic diving accident that takes the life of Nadia, a woman who was both the sister of Yehia and the girlfriend of Ali. Their love story echoes like a modern-day fairy tale, with Ali as the rich “prince” and Nadia as the poor “pauper.” But, as with all tragedies, their tale takes a dark turn when Nadia’s death is revealed to be no accident at all.
Ali, responsible for ensuring all diving equipment is properly checked, is initially blamed for Nadia’s death. But as the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that there’s more to the story—much more. The plot thickens when Yehia is wrongfully sentenced to 15 years in prison after being manipulated into taking the fall by Ali’s powerful father, Yasin, in exchange for his sick mother’s well-being. However, Yehia soon realises that the truth is far more sinister than he could have imagined.
Upon his release, Yehia embarks on a quest for revenge, determined to uncover the identity of Nadia’s killer. But what he uncovers goes beyond mere vengeance. As the layers peel away, Yehia learns that Nadia is pregnant and that Ali’s family, desperate to keep their son away from Nadia, may have been responsible for sabotaging her diving equipment. To make things even more complicated, Nadia had uncovered a family secret: Yasin’s wife, Sawsan, was having an affair, a truth she intended to expose before her untimely death.
As the investigation digs deeper, more shocking truths come to light. It’s eventually revealed that Yasin was an accomplice in the crime, though not the true mastermind. However, just when it seems like the truth might set things right, the film delivers its most jaw-dropping twist: the true killer is finally unmasked—but it’s a revelation that’s too late for Yehia to escape the consequences.
Huda El Mufti as Nadia, Asser Yassin as Yehia, Mahmoud Hemida as Yasin, Rakeen Saad as Leila, Khaled Anwar as Ali and Sherine Reda as Sawson.
Other actors include Mohammed Tharwat, Mohammed Alaa, Salma Abu, and many others.
This series is performed in Arabic.
Echoes of the Past is a gripping thriller with an impressive cast and some great plot twists, especially when the true killer is revealed. The actors, particularly Mahmoud Hemida as Yasin, shine in their roles, with the ageing makeup adding a nice touch. The story keeps you hooked, and the performances are top-notch, bringing real emotion to the suspenseful narrative.
That said, the cinematography can sometimes be a bit much, especially with the constant, dramatic rain during the fight and killing scenes, which feels unnecessary. Still, the film delivers a solid plot with strong character arcs, making it an engaging watch despite a few visual overindulgences.
